Martial Arts Training Gloves
Martial arts training gloves are as much for the protection of the fighter throwing the punch as for the person receiving it. This is more or less true dependant on the martial art or sports involved, but martial arts training gloves are common to most systems where striking is involved, even where this is not a requirement for competition. Systems, such as Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Savate and Sanshou (Sanda) use boxing gloves, and so the more padded sparring glove used by boxers has also become one of the common types of martial arts training gloves.
The style of martial arts training gloves used for Kenpo or Kempo has also been in use for a while. The Kenpo glove is also known as Bong Sau gloves, you’ll sometimes also see them used for Wing Chun and were worn by Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. These will allow you to practice your grappling skills, while still having enough padding so that you don’t have to worry about pulling your punches too much in training. Also the longer lacing design to the wrist guard gives additional support. Click here for quality Kempo gloves or click here for leather bag gloves.
Nowadays, there are also Mixed Martial Arts training gloves, a necessary spin of from the fight glove used in sanctioned competition. MMA training gloves are more similar in padding to a conventional boxing sparring glove and so suitable for light free sparring and for bag work, but these martial arts training gloves have a modern open hand design that also allows for grappling. A good quality pair of martial arts training gloves is essential. Not only will they last longer and mould to a better fit, they’re safer too because they’re much less likely to split than cheap gloves which is a risk your training partners won’t be happy to take! Ultimately, though, you need to look out for yourself. Wearing wrist and hand wraps appropriate to your fighting system and style will help, but top of the list is to invest in the right pair of martial arts training gloves.
